Ship "Index".
16b). Frigates, Types 15 / 16.
At
the end of WW11 it was found that the huge fleet of A.S.W. escort ships, that had
been built up, had rapidly been rendered mostly obsolete
due to the surprising performance exhibited
by the German "type XX1 u-boat".
Fortunately for us this, craft never came into
fully "Operational service" during WW11.
Once
WW11 had ended it was found that although the existing Loch, Bay, River and Black
Swan classes were adequately armed they were,
apart from the by now quite
elderly and outdated "Turbine powered" Black Swans, much too slow to be of much use
against "modern" submarines,
based on the "type XX1's", that were then in the design
stage with most countries Navy's.
Any new "Escort" ship would need to be able to make around 27 knots,
and need the "Electronics" to go with it, to prove
effective,
and that meant "Steam Turbine" machinery would be required,
and lots of it.
Post WW11 British industry at that time was unable to meet these demands,
so it was decided to refit the more modern WW11 designs of fast Destroyers
as
the type 15 "Full ASW Frigate" conversion and the type 16 "Partial ASW"
conversion.

Please
note that some "type 15 / 16's" may still be found in the following "section 17",
and that many of these ships can also be seen in their "Pre-conversion"
guise in "section 10".
